Dr. Hamizah Shahirah Hamezah is a research fellow at the Institute of Systems Biology (INBIOSIS), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). She graduated from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia with Bachelor of Science in Genetics (Hons.) and Master in Medical Science (Biochemistry). She completed her Ph.D. in Medical Science at Molecular Neuroscience Research Center, Shiga University of Medical Science, Japan, under the supervision of Professor Dr. Ikuo Tooyama and Associate Professor Dr. Daijiro Yanagisawa. Upon completing her Ph.D., she was appointed as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Diagnostics and Therapeutics for Brain Diseases, Molecular Neuroscience Research Center, Shiga University of Medical Science, Japan. She has a great interest in understanding the mechanisms of learning and memory, as well as interventions for the cognitive decline during aging and neurodegenerative diseases. Her researches focus on finding possible biomarkers leading to the cognitive decline in brain aging and Alzheimer’s disease by using the state-of-art omics approaches, brain imaging, and cognitive neurosciences. She is also interested in finding possible therapeutics for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases by investigating the effect of natural compounds on the transgenic animal models.
