  • Dr. Sumaiyah Mat is a lecturer and mid career researcher at the National University of Malaysia (UKM), Faculty of Health Sciences, where she also serves as Head of the Postgraduate Programme. She obtained her Bachelor of Applied Science (Biotechnology) and Islamic Studies (2009–2012), PhD in Medicine focusing on osteoarthritis and falls in older adults (2013–2017), and a Master of Applied Statistics (2018–2021), all from the University of Malaya. Her specialization is in the epidemiology of ageing, with research interests spanning frailty, falls, osteoarthritis, and rehabilitation, underpinned by expertise in advanced biostatistics, medical data mining, and systematic review methodologies. She has published 78 Web of Science–indexed journal articles and holds an H-index of 11, with experience as principal investigator and co-investigator on national and international grants, including large-scale longitudinal studies on ageing such as MELoR and AGELESS. In her academic role, Dr. Sumaiyah has supervised one PhD and two Master’s students to completion, with four PhD and two Master’s candidates currently under her guidance, and she has examined multiple postgraduate theses. She is an active member of several professional bodies, including the Malaysian Society of Geriatric Medicine (MSGM), Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI), and the Gerontological Association of Malaysia (GEM), and serves on the editorial board of BMC Geriatrics. Beyond academia, she contributes to community and professional initiatives, serving as Treasurer of PAWE-UKM’s Older Adults’ Society (2023–2025), Director for the International Day of Older Person (2023), and organizer of public outreach events on ageing, falls prevention, and dementia care. Her work consistently bridges rigorous epidemiological research with translational strategies to improve health outcomes and promote healthy ageing at the population level.
